MASTITIS
DEFINITION
Mastitis means the breast is inflamed. This most often occurs when feeding or pumping is delayed and milk builds up in a breast and leaks into surounding tissue, or infection can be caused by sore or cracked nipples as a result of a poor latch.
PREVENTION

Regular emptying of the breast by:

1. Frequent breastfeeding
2. Good hand washing
3. Hand expression
4. Pumping

Take care of you:

1. Eat a healthy diet
2. Drink to thirst
3. Get plenty of rest
4. Relax

Daily pacifier use has been associated with greater incidence of mastitis.

Lecithin cap 1200 mg,
3-4 times a day is a food supplement and has shown good results in reducing repeated episodes of mastitis.

Comfort Measures:

#1 Tylenol with Ibuprofen to reduce pain and decrease swelling.
#2 Warm shower, moist heat, and massage.
#3 Frequent breast emptying *Start with the unaffected side first.
#4 Ice packs after

 

Call your doctor. Antibiotic therapy is required and usually results in rapid relief. Increase your fluid intake. Be sure to finish your full course of antibiotics.
