Dentist Gives Mother Wrong Advise To Wean Night Feedings

I recently took my 2-year-old to the only MassHealth pedi dentist in the area and was alarmed to find out that they strongly (and I mean STRONGLY) encourage the breastfeeding mothers they see to wean their babies from night-nursing when the first tooth erupts (roughly 6 months). They say this is the cause of cavities in baby teeth, which I know to be completely false as proven out in numerous anthropological and scientific studies.

This is worrisome to me. Night-weaning at such a young age could seriously impact milk supply. Add to this that many of these low income families struggled to become a long-term breastfeeding families. They conquered the odds and then are told to wean! These dentists are basically strong-arming mothers to wean far earlier than they should with no medical proof. If these mothers are also working, then when do they get to nurse?

Does anyone know if there is a pamphlet about tooth care for long-term nursing babies? Does anyone know if the AAPD will be changing their anti-breastfeeding stance soon?
